    Running big data analysis and doing data engineering work has always demanded compute, storage, and orchestration infrastructure — most of the time on the cloud. Setting all of this up is enough overhead to slow down anyone who just wants to start working with data.

    In my past 10 years of big data engineering, the workflow was always the same: set up Python and Spark environments, write SQL or PySpark scripts, test locally, and eventually deploy to a cloud environment. Cloud compute like EMR Spark lacked interactivity, which prevented quick iterations. Notebook solutions offered some relief, but I always wanted a SQL/Py IDE with a Spark sandbox for quick query execution, data inspection, and visualization of results.

    More recently, I wanted AI to help with query writing — without having to explain the context over and over in every prompt. There are point tools and agentic CLIs you can stitch together, but the overall setup process has high friction for anyone new.

I got great results with a MacBook Pro (32 GB RAM) running 30B Gemma and Qwen models, both of which come built in. You can also use a cloud LLM if you prefer.
